Skyrocketing Vegetable Prices in Irba Market Hit Common Man’s Pocket Hard
Tomato Turns Red with Rage — Soars from ₹10 to ₹80 per kg
Ranchi — A steep hike in vegetable prices was witnessed this week at the weekly Sunday market held in Irba, located in Ormanjhi block. Consumers who came for shopping appeared visibly distressed. Many returned empty-handed after hearing the prices, while others, left with no choice, purchased vegetables at inflated rates.
Local residents stated that continuous rainfall over the past four to five days had already disrupted daily life, and now the soaring prices of vegetables have added to the public’s woes. Buyers allege that when farmers bring their produce to market, traders buy the entire stock at very low prices and then sell the same vegetables at several times the cost.
Some people believe that a drop in supply during the monsoon is common, which leads to such price surges.
Recent Price Surge:
- Tomato: ₹10/kg on Wednesday → ₹80/kg on Sunday
- Bitter gourd: ₹10 → ₹50/kg
- Onion: ₹15 → ₹25/kg
- Ladyfinger: ₹10 → ₹50/kg
- Sponge gourd: ₹10 → ₹60/kg
In addition to these, vegetables like cucumber, and radish were also seen selling at steep prices.
Local residents have demanded that the administration implement price control and monitoring mechanisms in vegetable markets so that common consumers can get relief from such inflation.
