Fire Breaks Out Due to Gas Leak at Ormanjhi Block Office Canteen, Major Disaster Averted Through Presence of Mind

Ranchi: A fire broke out suddenly at the canteen of the Ormanjhi Block and Circle Office in Ranchi district due to a gas leak. Thanks to timely intervention and quick thinking, the incident was prevented from turning into a major disaster. During the incident, a person named Chandan Kumar Singh showed alertness and courage by turning off the gas cylinder regulator and controlling the fire. He explained, “I often watch firefighting technique videos on YouTube. When I saw the fire in the stove and noticed that the gas cylinder was not on fire, I immediately went inside, turned off the regulator, and put out the fire. Then I took the cylinder outside and ensured its safety.” His swift and correct actions prevented significant damage.

Block Development Officer, Kameshwar Bediya, spoke about the incident saying, “I was busy at the block office, but as soon as I received information about the fire, I immediately came downstairs and assessed the situation. I saw Chandan Kumar Singh trying to put out the fire. He took the cylinder outside and completed the fire-extinguishing process. Chandan Kumar Singh’s presence of mind and prompt decision-making prevented this incident from turning into a major disaster.” He further added, “The fire-fighting equipment available at our office was used by the staff, but it was done from a distance, which made it less effective. According to initial information, the canteen cook, Pushpa Devi, suffered minor burns and was immediately sent to the hospital for treatment. The situation is now under control. Following the incident, the administration has decided to review safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future and strengthen safety protocols.

Important Steps and Measures to Prevent Fires

  1. Proper Use of Gas Cylinders and Appliances
    • Regularly check gas cylinders. Inspect the regulator and pipes from time to time to prevent the risk of gas leaks.
    • Never leave the stove or other gas appliances unattended. Always ensure the stove is completely turned off.
  2. Keep a Fire Extinguisher
    • Every home and office should have a fire extinguisher, especially in kitchens and other risk-prone areas.
    • Learn how to use it and ensure it is in working condition.
  3. Use Smoke Detectors and Alarm Systems
    • Use smoke detectors that will alert you as soon as a fire starts.
    • These devices can be installed in various parts of the home, especially the kitchen and bedrooms.
  4. Avoid Cigarettes and Open Flames
    • If you smoke, make sure to fully extinguish your cigarette before discarding it.
    • Never place open flames or burning objects near gas cylinders or other flammable materials.
  5. Be Cautious in the Kitchen
    • Always keep an eye on the stove while cooking and never leave it unattended.
    • Be extra cautious when working with hot pots and oil, as these can catch fire quickly.
  6. Keep Emergency Contact Information
    • Keep emergency service numbers (such as the fire department) in your phone and nearby in the house.
    • Additionally, practice fire drills so that you and your family members can respond effectively in an emergency.
  7. Increase Awareness About Safety Measures
    • Educate all members of your household and staff about fire safety precautions.
    • Teach children and the elderly about fire safety and ensure they know how to respond in the event of a fire.
