The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, graced the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution in the Central Hall of Parliament House today (November 26, 2024). Speaking on the occasion, the President stated that 75 years ago, on this very day, in this very Central Hall of the ‘Samvidhan Sadan’, the Constituent Assembly accomplished the monumental task of framing the Constitution for a newly independent nation. On that day, through the Constituent Assembly, we, the people of India, adopted, enacted, and gave ourselves this Constitution.

The President emphasized that our Constitution is the cornerstone of our democratic republic, ensuring both collective and individual dignity. She also highlighted that, upon completing 75 years of Independence, citizens celebrated the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. On January 26, next year, we will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Republic. Such milestones provide opportunities to reflect on the progress made and plan for the future, strengthening national unity and showing our collective commitment to achieving the nation’s goals.

The President remarked that, in one sense, the Constitution of India resulted from nearly three years of deliberation by some of the greatest minds. But in a broader sense, it was the culmination of our long struggle for freedom. The ideals of that historic national movement were enshrined in the Constitution, succinctly captured in its Preamble: justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. These ideals have defined India for ages, complementing each other to create an environment in which every citizen has the opportunity to flourish, contribute to society, and assist fellow citizens.

The President further noted that our Constitutional ideals gain strength through the active participation of the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, and all citizens. The Fundamental Duties outlined in the Constitution include protecting the unity and integrity of India, promoting societal harmony, ensuring the dignity of women, safeguarding the environment, developing a scientific temper, protecting public property, and advancing the nation towards higher achievements.

The President emphasized that, in line with the spirit of the Constitution, it is the responsibility of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary to collaborate for improving the lives of common people. She noted that the aspirations of the people have been reflected in the many legislations enacted by Parliament. Over the years, the Government has taken numerous steps for the development of all sections of society, especially the marginalized. These decisions have transformed lives and opened new avenues for development. She also expressed happiness over the efforts of the Supreme Court in making the judicial system more efficient.

The President affirmed that our Constitution is a living and progressive document. The visionary framers of the Constitution provided for a system to adopt new ideas according to the changing times. Many ambitious goals related to social justice and inclusive development have been achieved through the Constitution. With a new approach, India is earning a new identity on the global stage. Our Constitution’s framers had envisioned India playing a key role in promoting international peace and security. Today, in addition to being a leading economy, our country is fulfilling this role as the ‘Vishwa-Bandhu’.

In her concluding remarks, the President acknowledged that, in its nearly 75-year Constitutional journey, India has made remarkable progress in demonstrating its capabilities and developing conventions. She emphasized that the lessons learned from this journey must be passed on to future generations. The annual ‘Samvidhan Divas’ celebrations, since 2015, have helped raise awareness about our Constitution among the youth. The President urged all citizens to imbibe the ideals of the Constitution in their conduct, follow the Fundamental Duties, and work dedicatedly towards achieving the national goal of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by the year 2047.
